At the end of the 19th century, the Dutch government which controls Suriname in South America require coolies to work in plantations. Previously, the work was done by the servants or Negro slaves from Africa. However, after slavery was abolished in the mid-19th century, the Negro, who is described as Creole Suriname, left the plantation and flock to cities in Suriname.
