WASHINGTON-Earth is often called the Blue Planet because of its image that looks blue when taken during the day. But, if the Earthis also blue at night?
Latest image released by the National Oceanic and AtmosphericAdministration (NOAA) shows that after the sun sets, when viewedfrom space, the Earth is more like black marbles decorated withgolden glitter.
The image taken by Suomi NPP satellite instruments were releasedin the arena of the American Geophysical Union held in SanFrancisco, Tuesday (12/04/2012).
"For the same reason we have to look at the Earth during the day,we also have to look at the Earth at night. Unlike humans, the Earthhas not slept," said Steve Miller from the NOAA Space was quoted as saying on Wednesday (12/05/2012) .
The instrument used to produce the image is called Visible Earthtime Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). This instrumentactually works capture the data cloud, snow, and ice formations at night.
VIIRS is so sensitive that the light produced by the lamps on Earthwas visible. Looks Nile illuminated by light, as well as the eastern coast of the United States.
The image also shows the light coming from the moon, aurora, andnatural fire. Light is what makes Earth flickering like ornate goldglitter.
